“Many years ago, I was given a special pair of vegetarian leather Stan Smiths by my husband and Adidas”, the British fashion designer told Vogue magazine.

“I could not help but think [of] how many animals’ lives could be saved if Stan Smith and Adidas would change from real leather to vegetarian leather, and use non-animal based glues”.

The designer went on to say that she ‘really couldn’t tell the difference’ between real leather and its plant-based alternative.

Stella McCartney has worked with Adidas since 2005, designing a range of high-performance active wear for women.

“We’ve been collaborating with Adidas for many years, [so] I thought this would be a great way to reach a really wide audience and enable them to understand that you don’t have to have leather shoes or animal-based glues in order to have an incredible, iconic product”.

The re-imagined Stan Smith will include a colour-blocked heel, and will be embossed with Stella McCartney’s signature stars.

Whilst tennis great Stan Smith appears as standard on the sneakers’ left tongue, McCartney will now appear on the right.

The ‘Stella Stan Smith’ will retail from USD $300, and offer a ‘modern update that retains the classic appeal’ of the original sneaker.
