Two veterinarians open unique vegan-friendly nail salon!

IMG_8619When you’re in need of a manicure and pedicure, you don’t often expect the conversation to involve professional pet care advice. However, that’s exactly what makes Australia’s newest vegan-friendly nail salon one of a kind.

Opened by qualified veterinarians, Lisa Le and Yen Vu, late last year – Dr Nails & Spa aims to provide a Brisbane beauty destination that’s safe for people and animals alike.

Lisa and Yen have made an effort to exclude products that contain potentially harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, toluene and phthalates. The nail salon uses non-toxic polishes, and offers a wide range of products that are vegan and cruelty-free.

Walking into Dr Nails, you’ll quickly notice a few other differences. Firstly, the salon doesn’t smell of fumes – and secondly, there is not a drill in sight. So how did this unique salon come to be?

After fourteen years in veterinary care (and whilst completing her science PhD), it was Lisa who first decided to “take a break”, practice her English skills and follow a personal passion for beauty and customer service.

Lisa pursued work as a nail technician at a major shopping center, but soon found the rapid pace did not allow her to properly care for her customer’s nails, or to develop an understanding of their individual needs.

After Yen fell pregnant, the pair of best friends decided to open a nail salon on their own terms. The name ‘Dr Nails’ symoblises Lisa and Yen’s commitment to promoting the health of their customer’s nails – by minimising infection risks, using non-toxic products, and developing a repeat customer base.

Lisa believes that customers return to Dr Nails, because the team genuinely wants to help repair the damage often associated with acrylic nails. Instead, customers are recommended dip powders and other alternatives to acrylics, which are less harmful for their natural nails.

It’s also not unusual to spot customers visiting Dr Nails with their pets and children in tow – with everyone benefiting from the relaxed, welcoming environment:

“I wanted to open a salon that is kid-friendly, kid-safe, pet-friendly and pet-safe. I love animals, so it made sense for our products to be vegan and cruelty-free,” Lisa told

Dr Nails is located at: 81 MacGregor Terrace, Bardon QLD 4065.
